USA Today Travel recently featured Montserrat as a Caribbean destination where you can don your green garb and celebrate the patron saint of Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Patrick’s Day on Montserrat features a roster of spirited parades, jump-up breakfasts, pub crawls and cricket games leading up to a March 17 remembrance of the slave uprising that occurred on St. Patrick’s Day in 1768. (Featured Photo: John Cole)
The only nation after Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a national holiday, the tiny island is affectionately known as the ‘Emerald Isle of the Caribbean’. With a unique mix of African and Irish history, the green isle south of St. Kitts and west of Antigua goes into full Irish mode from March 8 –17 with a roster of spirited parades, jump-up breakfasts, pub crawls and cricket games leading up to a March 17 remembrance of the slave uprising that occurred on St. Patrick’s Day in 1768. Once home to indentured Irish Catholic servants, the harp and female figure on the island’s flag and official seal come from that Irish heraldry. Visitors will find a green shamrock is stamped on every passport upon arrival.
